What are the visa requirements for a UK citizen to enter the USA for a holiday?
Question by postie272000: What are the visa requirements for a UK citizen to enter the USA for a holiday?
My wife and I would like to holiday in the USA this year, we are british citizens, my wife has a biometric passport but mine is still the old type without a chip. Is there a limitation on my wife because she has a conviction for a serious offence even though this was 14 years ago?

No, usually barres to the U.S.A. are for 10 years. Your old passport is also good to go, since British citizens only need to have “machine readable” passports which are issued since 1988. For travel to the U.S.A. for up to 90 days as tourists you will need a Electronic System Travel Authorization (ESTA) effective January 12, 2009. This must be applied on the internet or at tourist agents at least three days before travel like my Government (Germany) tells.
So if you apply for a ESTA and get approval you can be sure that your wife’s offense is not counted any longer.
The ESTA approval however does not grant entry, you still have to meet the general requirements for entering the U.S.A. under the provisions of the Visa Waiver Program, as there are sufficient funds to be provided or holding of an onward/return flight ticket.
