There is no law regarding vacation time, so each company is different. Many have it so that after 1 year you get one week off and after 2 years you get two weeks. Then maybe after five or ten years you may get three.

What do you think? Answer below!

  1. Welcome to America, enjoy what little freedom we have left.

  2. The vacation time is nothing like you got in the UK
But surely you looked into all the details before you moved to the US

    Should have got a contract

This is not your father’s socialist country.

You get whatever you agreed to with your employer when you were hired. Why would you accept it if you think it is slave labor?

the thing is you seem to have only just started work with this company and yet are already asking about time off be it paid or un paid…………..

remember most of the states are “at will states” and if you make too much noise then good chance they will let you go so it will not matter much.

What I would do in the future is BEFORE you start work with a company let them know that you will be needing such and such a time off to go to the UK for a special occasion and MOST places will honour that.

  5. You get whatever paid or unpaid leave your employer is willing to give you. Most places make you work a year before you are entitled to a weeks vacation. Some employers give you no vacation. An employer is not required to give you any vacation if they choose not to.
If that isn’t to your liking,I’m sure there is an unemployed US citizen who would love to have your job.

Hint. What country are you in? The U S of A. You have 0 rights as an employee. You boss does NOT have to give you one single day off for holiday.

Aren’t you happy you are living and working in the ‘best country in the world’? Personally I find it hilarious that Americans can say that, (and I am an American as well, just not that arrogant or ignorant) and then have no employee rights nor any real holiday.

All you can do at this point is talk nicely to your employer. Maybe see if someone else would be willing to pick up some of the slack while you are off work, or if other employees would be willing to work in your stead (take your shifts if that is how it works where you are employed.) In the end, if you boss says no, then you have NO recourse.

People will make rude comments about you being from a ‘socialist’ country. What they clearly don’t understand is that employees who have the time (holidays) off work, in the end make for much better employees.
