Question by Tom F: Can i take a banjo onboard a plane as hand luggage? (USA to UK)?
I’m going on holiday to New York on Wednesday, if i can i am buying a banjo there, obviously it wont fit in my suitcase as i’m taking a week of clothing, so how can i get it back? Will it have to have a tag on it and just pick it up as seperate luggage in England, or can i have it as hand luggage?

Call your airline and ask. It will have to fit in the overhead bins so if they say no, then it has to be checked.

Many airlines permit musical instruments, like guitars and banjos as carry on items. The expectation is that they will fit in the overhead compartment. Some airline websites specifically talk about musical instruments in their section on baggage – others don’t. Check your airline. If the do not say anything on the web site, then you would be well advised to call them and make sure of their policy.
It’s kind of a crap shoot to check it. Hard sided case, obviously, but they can still be damaged by rough handling.
Good luck.
