I bought a timeshare in Nuevo Vallarta few years ago. We enjoyed it for the first three years, and then our home resort started to cut corners, and do things on the cheep, such as watering down the drinks. Each year the maintenance would go up quit a bit.

We started going to the Mayan Riviera, and ended up buying a timeshare there. They actually took our old timeshare as a trade, so we didn’t end up paying a lot for this one. I also stipulated we would not pay maintenance if we were to buy into this timeshare. They agreed.

If you are going to buy a timeshare, hold out for everything you can. Do not jump into it right away. Keep putting them off as long as you can. They will tell you that you have to sign now or the price will go up. Tell them you aren’t interested then, and walk away. They will come down in price, and will be after you until you leave. If you can’t get away from not paying maintenance fees, tell them you want them frozen at the existing price for the term of the timeshare. If not, walk away.

Yes it is possible, all depending where you will buy your timeshare

The biggest issue when buying a timeshare in a foreign country is if there are problems with the contract. You are often bound by the laws of the home country, and that could mean longer delay than you expect, or at least hiring a lawyer who specializes in international law.

The salespeople of these foreign timeshares can say anything that they want. You need to verify their claims BEFORE buying anything.

Timeshares are also nearly impossible to get rid of, so be prepared to pay that maintenance fee for a VERY long time. It’ll increase year after year as well.

My advice is to save your money and take vacations on your schedule not the schedule of a far away timeshare.
