How safe is the Dominican Republic for British Tourists?
Question by BVC: How safe is the Dominican Republic for British Tourists?
I’m thinking about going to The Dominican Republic for a holiday later this year, and taking my mother (in her 60s) and my 7 year old child with me (I’m a singlparent, so no men with us). Is it safe? And are there things for kids to do, apart from lying on a beach all day? Any advice much appreciated.

My exhusband goes there every year with his brothers. Alot of people bring their children, but I have been told it is safest if you stay at an all inclusive resort rather than venturing out to much because it is very easy to end up in the wrong area. Also I have been told they have some really crooked cops out there so you really cannot rely on anyone for help.

Its safer than Jamaica thats for sure but like Jamaica its one of those places people go then never leave their resort. I never understood that, why travel? You might want to look at going to Tobago, much better and you can get out and about and really see the place. I believe BA flies there.

THE PLACE IS AMAZING.
my mum and dad got married there not that long ago,
lots to do depending which part you’re at
some hotels are fab some are boring but most of them are good, like they have flumes, bar pools, arcades and stuff.
only problem is, is when you go into some towns, you get Alot of people coming up to you asking if you’ll buy some stuff out there shop or if you want your hair braided and stuff.
other than that yeah its an AMAZING place too go.
it’s very safe and very children focussed. Strong laws against child rape and killings.
I’ve been there many times with just my mom and I and no problems at all. I wouldn’t go this year though because of the Cholera outbreak, travel agencies are warning people to stay away
The Dominican Republic is an excellent holiday destination for British Tourists. Personally I would recommend you go to Punta Cana or Puerta Plata. Both of these destinations have great all inclusive resorts which means that all the hotel or resorts amenities and facilities are including in the price. Most of these resorts have kids clubs or activities for children and as they are by the beach offer fantastic opportunities for snorkelling, diving, kayaking etc.
Go to a resort and you will be perfectly safe. If you wander around town take some friends with you.The local s will try and sell you all kinds of nick knacks and they are very aggressive and insult your intelligence. That’s why i don’t go there anymore.
Stay away from those shacks at the beach – they have a thousand tricks to weasel money out of your pocket.Always go with some friends, never alone. Finally – choose a resort with at least 4 stars and stay away from the Ice cubes.
It’s safe. Most resorts have security gaurds. also, most resorts have child activities and stuff through the day.
