For a fist time holiday to America, where would be the best place to visit?
Question by jmf1002: For a fist time holiday to America, where would be the best place to visit?
I’m thinking of taking my family on a holiday to America. I’ve never been there before and my wife has only been to Michigan and Connecticut. She says Michigan is wonderful.
Anyone out there can recommend a good state to visit? I’ve heard that San Fransisco or New York are good places to start for first-timers in America.
Thanks

those are good places to go.
I also recommend going to Florida, including Orlando and Miami.
Then Arizona. This might sound like an odd place to go, but you fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, and you will see what I mean. It is beautiful there. If you go to Arizona. Get a hotel to stay in Scottsdale. Climb Camel back mountain. Definitely go to Sedona, Arizona. All the rocks are red and it is very pretty. All of these in Arizona are one day things too, so it’s not taking up all of your vacation.
I lived in Connecticut for 5 years. There’s really nothing worth visiting if its your first time in America. Detroit really isn’t that “special” either. I’ve never been there, but i hear it’s really run down.

You’ll be disappointed by New York. All huge cities are basically the same, and other than maybe three cool places there, it’s a grimy crowded city like any other.
If you’re visiting a new country, never go to the big cities, because all you’ll do is think ”Wow, this is no different from (capital city of your country).” The only big city I’d recommend is Las Vegas. It was LOTS of fun!
The person who mentioned Sedona is right. When you get close, all the mountains around you will suddenly change from the typical dusty brown to a brilliant red, and the little town nestled in the mountains is just lovely. Go to Slide Rock! It’s a stream that slopes downward and is slippery enough to be used as a slide into a little lake below. If you’re in Arizona, also check out Bisbee (and its haunted hotel!), Tombstone (big Old West feel, DO NOT MISS the VERY haunted Bird Cage Saloon), and the northern towns like Prescott. I lived in a dumpy little town in Arizona for ten years, but trust me – most of the state is actually quite beautiful.
If your heart is set on New England, why not go to Salem, Massachusetts? Stay at the Hawthorne Hotel and enjoy the rich history of the town, and the story of the Salem Witch Trials that still define and permeate the town to this day. The Witch Museum is a blast to visit. Go toward the end of October for some REAL fun!
Colorful Colorado
You should listen to your wife. Michigan is a great place to visit. It’s more true outstate, but even the Detroit metropolitan area has its charms. See the list:
Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit
Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak
Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, Dearborn
Museum of African-American History, Detroit
Motown Museum (the original home of the legendary record label), Detroit
Places to visit outstate include:
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore (largest sand dunes on fresh water in the world), Empire.
Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore (unique rock formations overlooking Lake Superior), Munising.
Mackinac Island (site of a colonial-era British military outpost), accessible from St. Ignace or Mackinaw City. NOTE: Have you ever seenthe movie “Somewhere In Time,” starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour? Parts of it were filmed on Mackinac Island.
I don’t know much about Connecticut, other than that it’s between New York City and Boston. I’m sure that it has its attractions as well.
Sure, NYC and San Francisco are good points of entry, and have a few things worth seeing in their own right. How much time will you have for this trip?
If you’re doing a family vacation-then you might want to relax with your family in a nice cabin with the fireplace. You know get that nice holiday feel.
Try Colorado (Aspen, Denver). Asheville, NC (nice attraction during the holiday is the Biltmore Estate. http://www.biltmore.com
Also you can try Salt Lake City, Utah. New York City is a nice place to go to as well for the holiday with the Christmas Tree at the Rockefeller center
To really recommend a great place to visit, answer 2 questions. 1) what time of year were you thinking of coming over and 2) what do you enjoy doing? (shopping? nature? museums? theme parks? etc. you get the idea)
The answer to those 2 questions will certainly help narrow down ideas.
