Dominican Republic holiday?
Question by Molly: Dominican Republic holiday?
Just doing a little research for my holiday… me and my family have booked an all inclusive hotel in the east of the Dominican Republic for a fortnight. They say there is no need to leave the resort beacuse it is dangerous; shanty towns, traffiking, theft, etc. But I’d really like to look around a place or what’s the point in going? So i’m just wondering if there’s any truth to what they say, what’s it really like? Any customs, etc, that I should know about to avoid standing out? I am a 16 year old white female, not easily scared by horror stories would jsut like honest please
Thanks guys

I went and stayed in an all inclusive resort in Puerta Plata and didn’t want to just hang out with tourists all day so I often went out and it was fine! It’s great to get out and see the real country and have contact with locals.
I didn’t find it dangerous, the only thing you will get is Dominican (and maybe Haitian) guys coming up to you trying to flirt and say “Linda Linda” and try and get your attention. There are lots of handsome guys there but it’s best to just ignore it and speak politely because it’s hard to get rid of them if you show any interest, they are persistant!
But I think for sure, try and get out of the resort and see the real D.R because it’s such a wonderful country!
What do you think? Answer below!
I went to Punta Cana two years ago with my husband. And there is NO WAY I would EVER go anywhere there by myself. The only time we left our resort was on a guided tour. If you go on a tour, take candy to throw to the children. They run behind tour buses, etc. trying to get candy.
It’s wise to always be careful wherever you go. Always follow local laws and stay in crowded places. Don’t believe the locals and never get lured into taxis or deserted places. Use taxis provided by the hotel only. Don’t eat or drink outside the resort. The safest countries in the world always have exceptions. These are simple common sense rules you follow anywhere you visit. Having said this, I did use local transport and visited many places in in DR. It was fun. It’s easier if you know Spanish.
Hi Molly,
If I understood well, you and your folks are going to Punta Cana or Bavaro. Well this is a big hotel strip with almost nothing to do or to discover outside. Everything is located at a distance. he stories they told you are simply told by people who don´t even know where the Dominican Republic is located, or people who don´t know how to travel!!! I suggest to forget all that nonsense and go and enjoy it! Next time I would advise to go to Puerto Plat 10x better and so much to see and to discover.
