Ontario in December? Do you realize that winter starts in December here? You can expect rain, snow, slush and temperatures hovering close to freezing.
Oh well, at least you wouldn’t have to worry about mosquitoes.
I’m not sure what flying company is the cheapest; I think you’ll just have to do some research and talk to people who have travelled on one of the airlines available to you. You’ll probably need a min. of $6000 CAD each for living here for 6 weeks. I included food at about $35/day and lodging as $100/night if you were to stay in a motel/cheap hotel every night, but I assume you’d share a room–that would make it a bit cheaper. And, of course, you’ll want to go out, have fun see things. To get from one place to another will be a little pricey since everything is pretty far away from each other here. You’ll have to use a Greyhound/Go bus to get around.
There are some great cities to go to in Ontario, and as long as you don’t mind the chilliness, the scenery is breathtaking if there is snow. I guess it depends what you want to do when you get here. If you want to experience the citiy-life of Ontario, I’d suggest Toronto or even Ottawa. Other than that there are some smaller cities which would have a nice social atmosphere (downtown though) like London, Guelph, St. Catherines, maybe Windsor (although it’s a bit smoggy) and perhaps even Hamilton, Waterloo, or Niagara-on-the-Lake/Niagara Falls. Also if you want to see the nice scenery of Ontario, there are usually a lot of small towns around these cities. And if you really want to have some good old-fashioned fun in Ontario, going to Algonquin Park for camping or staying in a cabin would be a great experience. You’d just have to be prepared for cold weather. And I think it can be a little pricey.
Some smaller expeditions could be St. Jacob’s village, which has a Farmer’s Market, Stratford, Pelee Island. If you want to go skiing I would suggest Horshoe Valley, Blue Mountain, Devil’s Glen.
You should plan out some of it, since you’ll have to make sure you can actually get to where you want to go to, but try not to over plan. Most people here are friendly, and they would be more than willing to give you some tips. Good luck and I hope it works out for you!
