You will need to apply for a work visa. If you want to work without one, just tell the people at customs you are on vacation.

The short answer – No. Employers in the US are required to verify your work status, and work visas are not easy to get unless you’ve got some special skill or training and are being sponsored by an employer.

There are some “underground” jobs that pay cash off the books, but it’s probably not the kind of work you’re looking for – things like a busboy/dishwasher in a small restaurant, or a day laborer doing menial construction worker (lifting, carrying, digging, sweeping).

Probably the best off-the-books job is a Nanny or Au Pair. Typically an au pair is a year-long position. But I’ve known a few people that found short-term positions here in the summer, when shools are on their summer break (in some circles here in Los Angeles, it’s very chic to have a european au pair).
