Do they have to get an american driver’s licence? Or can they just hire a car and drive it?

You’ll need to get an international driving licence before you leave…here in Qld that’s done thru the RACQ so I guess you should enquire from your local motorists assoc…no test involved & costs around ….

There is no need for an international licence. You can rent a car and drive on a normal Australian licence. You only need an international licence if there are language differences
Of course you can!
Just remember that driving in the US is opposite from driving in Australia (ex: the steering wheel is on the left.)
Also, on the freeways, your southbound is our northbound and your northbound is our southbound.
