Here in Italy, the holiday period for most people is in August. A lot of the businesses that are in the smaller cities or which are not organized around tourism shut down. Both of the hotels and many of the restaurants in the town where I live close for a few weeks in August.

In France, for the students it is in July and August (more precisely this year : from July the 3rd to september 2nd). The others people tend to take their holidays after July 14th.

In France people take the whole of either July or August as a holiday, generally, esp August so if you want to avoid peak period, June or September are good.
