Q&A: Visiting Europe at the end of November?
Question by Dizzy: Visiting Europe at the end of November?
Me and my friend are thinking about spending the Thanksgiving holiday (November 24th-27th) somewhere exploring Europe but we have never “crossed the pond” and are unsure where we could get the most out of our short visit.
Our ideal location would be somewhere where there is some English spoken. We are aware that we will need to learn the country we visit’s language but we also would like to be in a country where there is some understanding of English as well.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

For a short visit like this, take one destination and do not travel around.
In all of western Europe many people speak enough English that a tourist will not have any problems.
The countries with a Germanic language are better at speaking English than those with a Romance or Slavic language, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands are often claimed to be better in English than many native speakers, The south of Europe is less fluent, but as a tourist you will not need to worry. The former communist countries in the east have less people who are good in English, but there also the young people all learn English in school and the people working in tourist industry are able to communicate, if less easy.
My personal recommendation is to go to the place that ‘spells’ Europe for you, whether it is London, Paris or Amsterdam, or the villages of rural Germany.
Northern Europe, say Finland, Norway and Sweden may be dark and cold, But if you really want to, you can even visit those.

If you don’t mind the colder and rainier weather you should go to somewhere in Northern Europe, such as London or Amsterdam. There people speak good English.
If fluent English is not that important and you want milder weather you should go somewhere in southern Europe. Barcelona or Rome are both great places.
I would go to Barcelona, if I were you.You can get along with English just fine. The weather is still pleasant in November.
If you choose Barcelona, I suggest you check out PromptGuides.com. They offer preplanned city guides optimized for 1, 3 or 5 days. It saves you much planning time. You find the 3 day guide here: http://www.promptguides.com/barcelona/guides/three_day_guide.htm
