Q&A: Recommendations for an August european holiday?

Question by BioGirl: Recommendations for an August european holiday?
We’ve never been to mainland Europe, and have a holiday planned for early August. We have 4 nights, and will be leaving from London. We’d like to go somewhere warm, but not too hot (30 degrees and lower is ok!). Relaxing, but with some sightseeing opportunities as well (thinking lying in the sun half the time, the other half exploring, but are open to other ideas). We’re not clubbers, and would rather stay away from the party/excessive drinking scene, but enjoy good food and wine. What would you recommend?
Thanks!

Go to France! Since you’re going to be leaving from London.
It’s beautiful in July/August. Especially because it’s the lavender season. If you’re interested in a slow hike,

    Hi Biogirl

Thats a real no brainer – it just has to be Barcelona. An amazing city that ticks all the boxes you asked for. Cheap flights from London easy to find. Great food, Great people, real buzz about the place.

    You’ll love it.

I guess Turkey would be great for you … I have recently been here and i must tell you this place has got the most exotic places, spas, fitness clubs and loads of adventures making your family outing a life time moment…i found a site quite useful for great cheap and luxury hotels from which i booked a reasonable priced hotels from a variety of hotels…check out…you might also find it useful…

Based on everythign you have said and particularly with the emphasis on good food and good wines and also on avoiding rowdy crowds etc then I would recommend Tuscany in Northern Italy. Places such as Pisa are great bases and Pisa in particular is served by the budget airlines in England so it can also be quite cheap to get to.
The only problem is that temps may hit 30s.
Otherwise I highly recommend a city such as Helsinki, Finland. Might not be everyone’s first choice but its a great city for the summertime. Not so good for the food and wine but still some intrersting local dishes and drinks. Accommodation wise try someone such as Holiday Velvet and flights try easyjet.com
