Question by Why does everyone hate me?: Has anyone traveled/backpacked to the Ukraine solo during the summer months?
I am planning a sabbatical/holiday/adventure and want to go someplace totally different from America. Many countries have come to mind and consideration but a friend told me to consider Russia/Ukraine. Any thoughts or experiences that people want to share?

Adventure is great but make sure that you buy some insurance.
No, no, not medical insurance.
Imagine being kidnapped. Buy some insurance for that kind of stuff.
The former eastern block countries are great if you stay in hotels and take advantage of your spending power but backpacking can be risky.

I have travelled alone to kiev. I found it fine but you need to be wise in the night time. Common sense is need alot..Many not many speak english of course but there are places that do.. I stayed at the hotel Ukraina dont stay there if thinking of a hotel, I never backpacked there and for me i would not.. I had airport transfer and glad i did the taxis will rip you off or ingore you.. There was things to do but after 7 days pleased to leave it behind.. Is differnet yes! can be hard and can be interesting.. I am glad i saw it even if it was not for long and saw little of the country..Just research the place good before you leave… What ever you choose enjoy your holiday!
