Q&A: Can I do Scandanavia plus north Eastern Europe in 1 week?

Question by Ben: Can I do Scandanavia plus north Eastern Europe in 1 week?
I am planning a holiday in October on going to the following countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania and Poland
Is it possible to visit these places in within 7 days, or are there any specific countires that you think aren’t really worth it?

Taking into account the time needed to travel, seven days is a very short time. Sweden to Finland and then take the ferry to Tallinn in Estonia would be enough.

It’s a really short time, you need to know that a ferry from Sweden to Finland takes from the early evening to the morning after if you travel at night. You can visit Tallin in 3 days (going – visiting – back) and then the rest spend it in Finland. If you want to add Sweden you should count a day or two more and add more days if you want to see Norway.

You wouldn’t really see anythung if you stopped in every country for just two days, it’s not worth it.

Not really, no. If I had to cut one out, I’d cut out Norway since it’s the furthest away from your other destinations. Norway and Sweden are similar since they are both Scandinavian and neighbors. Of course the geography is different, but you hardly have time in one week to see it all. It’ll cut down on your travel time as well. I also think Stockholm is prettier than Oslo. Stockholm is so cool, the city is built on a series of islands. Oslo is nice, but it’s charm takes more than a day to notice and it isn’t the major tourist sites. It’s in the neighborhoods with street art and a cool vibe. All that takes time to see and experience. I always feel bad when I meet or host someone who only has a night to spend in my city. They rarely leave with a good impression.

Do stick to the capitols and other major cities, you don’t have time to go off the beaten path.

I’d also only spend a day in Finland or cutting it out since you’ll be going to Lithuania. You’ll have the overlap of the Slavic cultures with those two countries and Lithuania is the more interesting of the two IMO. Estonia would be better than both.

Also, if you go to Poland skip Warsaw. Krakow is pretty cool and so is Gdansk. If I only had a night or two, I’d go with Krakow.

You should focus on the Eastern and Central European countries. Those are the ones that are changing so rapidly. The Nordic countries won’t change nearly as much in the next ten years and the others will.

No, you can not do 5 countries in 7 days, even less those 5 countries, as they are (almost all) big and the things to see not really accessible from the airport.

I would say take one country and spend your 7 days there.
Norway itself is so big and diverse that you need more than 7 days to see all different landscapes.
And unlike an other answerer here, I do not think it is like Sweden at all.

If you want to do more than one country, fly into Stockholm, do some sightseeing, in and around town, travel across the mountains to Norway and work your way south from there. You can end up in Bergen, which is a nice city, or Oslo, which is lovely.

Excuse me Ben, but you are completely crazy! All this in 7 days?
To visit Norway properly and enjoy the scenery you need at least a week, in Sweden you need a week, Finland also – AT LEAST! So that’s 3 weeks in total.

I never went to Lithuania or Poland… I would like to go to Poland though.

Not and do justice to any of them. They are all beautiful countries with lots to offer and need more time than you have. If you only have one week, I suggest Norway and Sweden.

  6. Go for it – see what you see, if you like the look or feel of somewhere, stop or plan to go back another time. From meeting lovely people from all the countries you say without ever having visited the countries I bet you could find at least one thing to make all of them worth visiting – the question is, do you just want to go there and back and gain just a check list of places you have been, like some to do list – crap reason to go travelling anywhere in my opinion.

  7. no.
