Q&A: Any major celebrations or holidays in England in May?
Question by crimson: Any major celebrations or holidays in England in May?
Are there any holidays or festivals in May in England where there is a lot of drinking or partying at night? I need this for a story I am working on. I plan on having some characters stay out late, but they need to be in the middle of a huge celebration where streets are packed and what not. Does anything happen at the end of May or beginning of June that sounds like this? Thank you

May Day celebrations (at the start of May)? Although that’s more quaint than ‘proper’ partying.

I can think of a few huge celebrations … Notting Hill Carnival in London which is over the August Bank Holiday weekend, which is the last weekend in August (this year it’s 29, 30, 31 August) … New Year celebrations all over Scotland, and also the west country, for instance St Ives in Cornwall
there’s May Day of course, which traditionally 1st May but which is now celebrated on the first Monday in May when we have a Bank Holiday … this year it’s Monday 4 May … but we don’t tend to have huge celebrations any more … there’s another Bank Holiday later in May which used to be Whitsun, but is now called Spring Bank Holiday, but again I can’t think of any huge celebrations … there’s always a lot of partying on St Patricks Day which is the Irish national saints day but is also widely celebrated in England because we have a large number of people with Irish ancestry, but that’s 17 March … the Scots will also celebrate Burns Night on 25 January
can’t you shift your story to August … Notting Hill Carnival is three days of non-stop partying in that area, especially if you’re of caribbean ancestry
What the fcuk do you think we have got to celebrate at the moment
Next May we are all going to have a massive “Good riddance Gordon” party – now that should be worth the admission price
