We are going to France soon and apparently there is a bank holiday on the Saturday that we’re going. As the shops won’t be open we are planning on going and having a nice long lunch in a restaurant with a few bottles of wine. However, my friend has just said that restaurants might be shut too! ARGH! Please let me know if you have any info.

a bank holiday is an opportunity for people to eat out so restaurants are surely open, it is a good business day.
Yes, 99% will be open. Many do not close until around 3 or 4 am, including Christmas day! Make certain you make a reservation as they can be very busy.
From the information that you give, it seems that you will be there on Saturday November the first. This is All Saints day and the day when the French go to cemeteries to leave flowers on the graves of their dead relatives. It is not a day of rejoicing, but because it is a Saturday lots of people will make a week-end of it, and restaurants will definitely be open, but full of French people. So if you want a nice long lunch book now, otherwise you will be wasting hours looking for one that is not full to the gunnels, especially if you are on a day trip across the Channel.
PS. Take a warm coat, the coastal towns are freezing and windy at that time of the year and if you go for a walk after your meal, you will need it.
