Austrian cuisine tends to be very healthy. As the country is also quite modern and advanced, food is as regulated, inspected and controlled as we are used to in the U.S. and U.K. Many dairy foods are indeed, pasteurized, but as many Austrians and their guests enjoy the flavor the richness of natural dairy products, some homemade and farm-made cheeses will be natural. However, as the country is clean and the people are very health-minded, your baby shouldn’t suffer any ill effects if you enjoy the good, healthy cheeses of Austria. As for meat products, farms are also carefully inspected and their products are likewise healthy and delicious. Have a wonderful holiday in beautiful Austria! Be sure to get to the lovely Tirol region.

Certain foods should be avoided completely during pregnancy, including:
• Cheese made from unpasteurized milk (unpackaged, real buffalo mozzarella, some brie or camembert, gorgonzola)
• Cold cuts and other uncured meat (prosciutto, bologna)
• Raw fish: sushi, seared tuna steak, lox
• Smoked fish or meat
• Raw meat: steak tartar, carpaccio
• Raw eggs: homemade mayo, eggs over easy, soft-poached eggs
• Salad bar foods
These foods can contain listeria, salmonella, toxoplasmosis and nitrites, all of which are extremely harmful for the unborn baby.
