Does the United Kingdom Have a National Holiday? If So, What is It?
Question by flazatty: Does the United Kingdom Have a National Holiday? If So, What is It?
In the United States, there is Independence Day (July 4), and in Canada, there is Canada Day (July 1), and in Australia, there is Australia Day (January 26), and in France, there is Bastille Day (July 14). Other countries have national holidays as well. Is there a national holiday in Great Britain? If so, what is it? Thanks.

Yes we do have a National Day……Welcome to the Land of the Freebie to all our Immigrants Day.a bit longwinded the title i know, but at least its true. And we hold it EVERYDAY !
New Years Day
Easter Monday
May Day
Spring Bank Holiday Monday
August Bank Holiday Monday
Christmas Day
Boxing Day (26th of December, nothing to do with pugilists)
Wales has St Davids day
Ireland has St Patricks Day
Scotland has St Andrews day But we do not have St Georges day because it might cause offence, don’t ask
Not at the moment, but it has been discussed over the last few years. Suggestions have been Trafalgar Day, Battle of Britain Day and a few others, but they haven’t really caught the country’s imagination.
@George: St Andrews day isn’t a public holiday in Scotland and there aren’t any parades or celebrations and I certainly don’t get the day off work. Just like St Georges day in fact.
No we don’t have a national day. It’s something you see more in newer nations like you describe, or in those who have experienced major political and social change like France.
Neither of these things apply to the UK.
Unfortunately not – we have fewer public holidays than most countries.
George: NONE of the national saints’ days are public holidays in their countries (except Patricks’ in the Republic, not sure about NI), so get that chip off your shoulder.
