You will need to apply for a tourist visa to visit Ukraine according to the Embassy in Australia.
Citizens of the European Union, the US and Japan don’t need it, however Australians have to apply even to visit as a tourist.
You will need a “letter of invitation” from a Ukrainian or Australian tourist agency with tour details or hotel booking confirmation.

The same applies for visiting Russia. They also require that you submit an application. See my source below, the Russian embassy in Australia.
Dasha you may need a visa for Ukraine
You will certainly need one for Russia.
You should not really have any problems obtaining one though.
If you was in the eec you would not need a visa for up to 90days.
