Croatia is good choice! But picking up just one destination is nearly impossible…
Split and it’s area could be interesting for you and for the kids as well if you are interested in history. Trogir it’s worth a while if you like small, but adorable places..
But my favorite is Zadar: Less popular (and crowded) than the two destination above but those two can easily access from there as a day-trip; has a Mediterranean-style nightlife but it’s close to the Krka National Park as well and it’s old-town is really nice..
At Krka definitely go to a boat trip up to the river. It is enjoyable for teenagers too.
Sibenik is close to Zadar, has a fascinating old-town and you can go rafting.
If you are gourmand go to the island of Pag: the cheese there is really something…
It’s doesn’t sound like a short holiday, but I was staying in Zadar, swim in the sea a lot (around Zadar some beaches are sandy whiich is quite rare in Croatia), go to dive and visited all the places mentioned above in 8 days.
Anyway, it’s doesn’t matter where you go: definitely go to a day-trip by a small boat around any small island by a personal guide. Croatians are really friendly!

don’t miss Dubrovnik nor Split
I went to Zargreb..I liked this as it was different to the coastal towns.
Dubrovnik, just lovely…but its not that big, I had a day and saw the old part of town and walked the walls.
Split- again only a day and again is nice to walk around and see the older parts of town
Zadar – has some lovely views of the water and some cool buildings, but this was the only place I had diffiuculty with language (if you know german it would help I would say).
I took buses as there are no trains up and down the coast, but apparently a lot of people drive.
I would also go to the national Park.some lakes there are supposed to be stunning and maybe some of the Islands…as you can get ferries from places like split to go and see or stay there.
- Definitely Plitvice (National Park: lakes, waterfalls… beautiful!!).
- Very nice cities: Zadar, Split or Dubrovnik.
- From Zadar it’s close to the island of Pag and National Park Kornati – 365 small islands, there are boat trips available, with snorkelling and picknic, sometimes you can see dolphins
- Near Dubrovnik there are also beautiful islands – Mljet and Korcula.
- You take a ferry from Dubrovnik to Split, really nice views
- There’s also nice National Park – Krka, you can swim in a beautiful lake
If you need any more info email me, i go to Croatia every year since 1998
