a holiday in eastern europe or turkey?

Question by happinesswithin: a holiday in eastern europe or turkey?
i am planning a 2 week holiday in october with my partner (not long enough, but my finances are already stretched to the limit!!) and am undecided on whether to visit turkey (ie. istanbul and the north, not the beach resorts!!), or go to countries such as hungary and serbia.

we want to go somewhere relatively cheap, but also lively, where there is lots to do and see. also it would be nice to have a chance to meet and eat/drink with the locals!

any suggestions anyone?! cheers.

Prague. Although it may no be so cheap anymore; it has become quite popular. But lots to see and do and lots of young people.
And from there you can take trains to other cities, if you get bored after week.

I was in former Yugoslavia before the war (1988) and there is beautiful scenery, I don’t know your linguistic aptitudes but in Croatia many under the age of 40 spoke either german, french or italian; I have heard Budapest is nice (a friend of mine from Toronto used to live there) but well .. it’s really up to you.

I’m maybe too subjective now, but I think you should (also) visit Croatia. If weather is nice I think you could even swim in the sea. Wonderful coast and cities, it’s not expensive… You can see more here: http://www.croatia.hr. ;)

Hungary and Serbia. They have everything you’re looking for: reasonable prices, very lively! and lots to do and see. As far as eating and drinking with the locals, in Serbia that’s the only way to do it! The people are open, warm and friendly and you’ll make lots of unexpected acquaintances and be surrounded by a relaxed, informal atmosphere all the time.

The distance between Hungary and Serbia is small and you will have no difficulties reaching either place any time day or night. I know both countries are much more than just the capitals, but they are the best in terms of entertainment&sightseeing.
