Best answer:

Answer by Heterónimo
Well,

25th of April, Carnation Revolution of 1974 that ended 50 years of fascism.

1st of December, 1640, when Portugal re-gained independence from Spain.

10th of June, Portugal day, also celebrates our biggest poet, Camões.

5 October, 1910, when Portugal became a Republic

and that’s it, all other national holidays are catholic and are also celebrated in other countries.

Pavlova

The Pavlova is a dessert invented in Australia and named are the great ballet dancer Anna Pavlova. Pavlova is a wonderful summer holiday dessert – and therefore makes a regular appearnace on many Australian Christmas menus.:

3 egg whites
1 pinch of salt
3/4 cup of castor sugar
1/4 cup of white sugar
1 tablespoon of cornflour
1 teaspoon of lemon juice
300 ml / ½ pints of cream
kiwifruit or strawberries for garnish

Preheat the oven to 150°C, 300°F or gas mark 2 (the temperature is reduced for baking). Beat the egg whites to a foam, add the salt and beat until soft peaks form which fold over when the beater is removed. Slowly beat in the castor sugar, beating well after each addition. Keep beating until the mixture is stiff and the peaks stand up when the beater is removed. Mix together the white sugar and cornflour. Lightly fold into the meringue with the lemon juice.

Line an oven tray with baking paper. Spread the meringue into a circle and pipe a decoration around the edge or swirl with a spoon if desired. Bake in a cool oven (80°C or 180°F) for 2 to 2½ hours. Turn off the heat and leave in the oven overnight to cool.

Top with whipped cream and decorate with sliced kiwifruit, sliced strawberries, passionfruit, or just about any tropical fruit, just before serving.

I intend to go to Paphos in October can I expect the weather to be warm.

Best answer:

Answer by Ian M
October is a good choice.

You will have missed the stifling heat of mid summer, expect temperatures in the low 30C range in the afternoon falling to about 20C overnight, humidity will also be lower. Best yet is that the lager lout tourists will have gone home.

Meals and drinks are considerably cheaper than the UK expect to save about 50% compared to UK prices.

Traveling Europe for Christmas, Need Suggestions, as far as “WHAT ARE THE BEST TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF EUROPE”?

Question by Pinky: Traveling Europe for Christmas, Need Suggestions, as far as “WHAT ARE THE BEST TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF EUROPE”?
My fiancé and I ( from Texas, USA ) will be traveling to Europe during the Christmas holidays for about 2½ to maybe 3 weeks. We will fly into AMSTERDAM then travel by train to other countries. From all we have read on this website, we would like to spend “X-MAS IN GERMANY”. Where should we spend “NEW YEARS EVE”? After Germany, we want to travel to ITALY, SPAIN, FRANCE and maybe Austria and if time allows (not necessarily in this order ). In which order should we travel these countries? Can we travel to all of these countires by train (Rail Pass)? Can we see all these countries in this amount of time? How much time do you think we need to spend in each country? Which are the “MUST SEE SIGHTS” of each country? We don’t want to miss their main attractions. Please list the cities and their “MUST SEE SIGHTS”. This is our first trip to Europe and we want it to be a memorable vacation. Would love to hear from Europeans or Experienced Europe Travelers. Thanks a Million

Well, I have been to the 3 countries ( Spain, France and Italy)…I would take Paris…France over the other 2 in a NY minute.. between Italy and Spain.. it is a coin toss, however, given the time of the year I think Italy would be my first choice since Spain is more of a Summer country…by the way my cities selections are Spain: Barcelona , Italy: Rome, Florence and Vinece….in that order…other places to consider are Bruge, Belgium…Beautiful
Prague, Czech Republic…Awsome.

How long before my student visa expires can I come back to England from holidays?

Question by Miss Lacoste: How long before my student visa expires can I come back to England from holidays?
Hi everyone! I’m on the UK student visa, which expires on the 30th of November 2010. At the moment I am home for holidays, but want to go back for my graduation ceremony in early November 2010. Does anybody know if it is possible to do so? How long before my visa expires can/should I go back to England?

Thanks in advance.

Best answer:

Answer by andie.rose
Your visa expires the moment you leave the country. I unfortunately learned that myself when I went traveling around Europe.

They may still allow you in if you tell them its for graduation. They were jerks to me because my semester was over and therefore technically I was no longer a UK student. They still let me in but they were not happy about it. They seriously asked me “what the hell are you thinking…” blah blah blah

What is Leskovac in Serbia like? Has anyone ever been there? What are prices like for going out, eating out etc?

Question by Irish: What is Leskovac in Serbia like? Has anyone ever been there? What are prices like for going out, eating out etc?
Thinking of going to Serbia for a holiday and wondering about Leskovac? Don’t really like capital cities so avoiding Belgrade, thought about Novi Sad the second city but it seems to be a little pricey for the Balkans.

Is it true southern Serbia is cheaper than northern Serbia? Any info appreciated. Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by MP
Why do you hate capital cities? Belgrade is probably one of the most important places you could visit in Serbia, especially the Kalemegdan fortress. Leskovac is a place that has seen better times. It used to be the major textile center in the Balkans and made high quality textiles before WWII. It was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944 and post-war Communist mismanagement and then the 1990s wars. They have a famous “grilled meat” Oktober-festish thing in September: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rostiljijada

Nis is the 3rd largest city in Serbia (in the south, so probably cheaper) and has some interesting Roman sites there (Constantine the Great was born there) as well as the skull tower. Other things you could see are castles (Maglic, Smederevo, Bac, Uzice, Golubac, Manasija ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fortifications_in_Serbia ), national parks and mountains such as Zlatibor, Kopaonik, Stara Planina, Tara, Djerdap ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_Serbia ) or medieval monasteries such as Zica, Mileseva, Sopocani, Djurdjevi Stupovi, Studenica, Manasija, or the churches of Kosovo.

Can I get an all inclusive cruise to europe from the U.S. over the Christmas holidays 4 around $2000 a person?

Question by thememphians: Can I get an all inclusive cruise to europe from the U.S. over the Christmas holidays 4 around 00 a person?
Or even a trip there, doesn’t have to be a cruise. I’d actually not prefer a cruise, but it doesn’t matter. Whatever’s the cheapest! I’m a teacher and don’t make any money! :) Speaking of that, are there any teacher discounts?

Best answer:

Answer by Michael B
You are traveling during peak time on what is usually a very expensive trip. I think you will need to reevaluate your budget. Check with AAA to see what kinds of they might have, a cruise might not be realistic, because they are all inclusive, and that gets expensive.

I am married to a French national and would like to visit Luxembourg for holidays.?

Question by benn q: I am married to a French national and would like to visit Luxembourg for holidays.?
Do i apply for a Schegen visa via the french consulate or the luxembourg consulate.

Best answer:

Answer by Willeke
If you plan to fly into and out of Luxembourg, that is the nation you apply for visa.
But if your visit also includes a visit to France, to meet up with relatives or something like that, you can also apply at the French consulate.

The French and Luxembourg consulates should both use the same set of rules, your being married to an EU member national, regardless of which country.

Q&A: HOLIDAYS IN SICILY??? WHERE SHOULD WE STAY?

Question by sweet_dreams: HOLIDAYS IN SICILY??? WHERE SHOULD WE STAY?
Im planning to go to palermo for 10 days at the end of august. Me and my friends wanna rent a car there and travel around. But where should we book a hotel? Should it be in Palermo or other area?? We need a nice hotel..beach and close to center with all entertainments.

Best answer:

Answer by giograceffa
Palermo is great for the Arts. A bit hectic. People flock to Taormina for the beach. I personally don’t like to walk on pebbles. For me, the best beaches I’ve been to is in San Leone, near Agrigento. Long stretches of fine sandy beaches along the southern coast of Sicily are all fine powder. Also, there are many hidden or seldom used beaches such as Punta Bianca. I’ve been to a few, but was taken there by my relatives that know all the short cuts.

For a bit more info, see the following link.

http://www.thesicilysite.com/Pages/Sanleone.htm

Agrigento is about an hours ride south and has lots of Ancient Roman and Greek ruins and artifacts, including a huge museum dedicated to the same.
Plenty of hotels to choose from.

I think you’re better suited in or near Agrigento since it also has a pretty good night life in San Leone during the summer only. If you do reconsider, you’re better off flying into Catania instead of Palermo.

Question by sball124: lithuania?
has anyone traveled to lithuania? i want to take my boyfriend to lithuania and maybe watch a soccer game…without contacting a travel agent just yet, cuz i find them to be a little pressuring….anyone know of a good way to make a trip like that? any good sites we HAVE to see? about how much can a trip like that range? hotels? food? advice? Ive never been to out of the US, so this is all new to me. any advice will be appreciated. when is soccer usually going on?

Best answer:

Answer by hdsla
Well, never been to Lithuania but I did live in Poland (next door neighbor) for a year. Best thing to do is check every website you can think of for good flight . expedia.com, travelocity.com, cheaptickets.com many of these can also find you a good deal on a hotel. Eastern Europe can be a bit tricky legally so definitely check out the American Embassy in Lithuania and the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington D.C. websites for more info there. Eastern European countries are generally VERY inexpensive compared to the United States. On the soccer issue, I can only offer this advice: when talking to Europeans, call it “football” or they’ll peg you as an ignorant tourist & you don’t want that.

You will probably find a lot more about Finland on wikipedia or google searches than on here.

Like most nodic countries, they have special celebratons for the summer solstice. Tractors are important in Finland, as are Saunas. I know this sounds a bit strange but it is true.

It is dark very early in the winter time, right about now even.

Jahson I told you in the other question
“It’s somewhat hard to believe that a country so small like Malta, has areas of the country that the night life has been compared to the scene in Ibiza. The difference between Malta and Ibiza is that Malta’s price list for cocktails and beverages is extremely lower to that of Ibiza.
There we can find Hard Rock Cafes, Beach bars, Banging Nightclubs, Irish Bars just every type of themed and intriguing pub and club you could think off!! On every beach you will find numerous beach bars and open restaurants. These venues offer entertainment every night. And let’s be Blunt, it’s Cheap!!!! beach bars are amazing!! Also, the loud Party areas are divided away from the quieter resort areas, and the local villages; comfort always comes first in Malta.
Answering your another question, Madonna refers to Mary (Mother of Jesus) but It can also means: Ma donna -> My lady. If u will go to Malta, Have a nice trip!”

Now about the dress It’s more summer dress coz we are in summer now, they are really fashion also.
