What is all the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand?

Question by Black Kitten: What is all the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand?
I recently began watching two new shows on TV that are hilarious, both are from over seas. One from Australia (Summer Heights High), the other from New Zealand ( Flight of the Concords/HBO)
Both make continual jokes at the expense of the others Nationality. I don’t understand most of them.
I think both Australian’s and New Zealander’s seem great.
So tell me what it’s all about? When did it start? How? And is it mostly done in fun or are people really serious about disliking the other?

Australia and NZ are like big and little brother.
Like Canada and the US.

South Australia – Adventure and Wildlife

If you’ve climbed the bridge, circled the rock and snorkelled the reef… it’s time to meet the real Australia. In South Australia you can do the stuff others are only just beginning to discover… So get off the backpacker trail and: – Hike around Kangaroo Island, the wildlife haven they’re calling Australia’s newest ‘icon’ – Dive wrecks, kayak in wetlands, surf sand dunes, camp in the desert, play nine holes over a 1300 kilometre golf course, The World’s Longest Golf Course – Look for opals in the outback opal mining town of Coober Pedy – Drive through the awesome landscapes of the Flinders Ranges and Outback – Cycle through valleys and vineyards – Swim with tuna, sea lions and dolphins on Eyre Peninsula — or take a cage dive with Australia’s fearsome great white sharks – Pick grapes during the crazy “vintage” season in the beautiful Barossa Valley – Attend the massive Adelaide Fringe when the entire city of Adelaide becomes the butt of its own jokes … All this and more is within easy reach of Adelaide, the most festive and chilled out state capital in Oz.

What are the standard Student holidays in Australia?

Question by Si: What are the standard Student holidays in Australia?
Dates of periods i.e. Half terms, Summer holiday, Christmas, Easter etc

Best answer:

Answer by Elizabeth
The actual dates change from state to state but in general the school year goes from very late January to early December.

For example in Queensland the dates are as follows.

2010 school holidays for Queensland state schools
Term 1 break: Friday 2 April – Sunday 11 April
Term 2 break: Saturday 26 June – Sunday 11 July
Term 3 break: Saturday 18 September – Sunday 3 October
School finishes: Friday 10 December

Term dates Queensland 2010.
Term 1: Wednesday 27 January – Thursday 1 April – 10 weeks
Term 2: Monday 12 April – Friday 25 June – 11 weeks
Term 3: Monday 12 July – Friday 17 September – 10 weeks
Term 4: Monday 4 October – Friday 10 December – 10 weeks

Edit: As arokh72 said we have nation wide public holidays but Labour Day is not on the same day in every state. In Queensland it’s in May, in some states it’s in March and others in October.

What do you think of New Zealand as a holiday destination?

Question by gisborneknight: What do you think of New Zealand as a holiday destination?
What was your impression of New Zealand? The people (were they friendly), the countryside, the cities, the culture… everything!

Best answer:

Answer by x_2many2list_x
I have never been to New Zealand myself but it certainly seems like a nice place to me! Located in the southern hemisphere, New Zealand is far away from the hustle & bustle of many big cities. This fact already makes New Zealand a wonderful holiday destination! Also, the people there seem really jolly & contented with life. You’re bound to have a happy holiday. :D

What are the chances of getting a cheap last minute flight from UK to New Zealand at Christmas?

Question by Cal R: What are the chances of getting a cheap last minute flight from UK to New Zealand at Christmas?
I’ve been looking for flights recently so i can go out to NZ over the christmas period to see my parents but their all too expensive at the moment, would it be worth waiting and jumping on a last minute offer near the time as i have no strict travel plans to keep?

I’m leaving on/around the 19/12/2007 and returning to the UK on the 02/01/2007, but as i say these dates have a degree of flexibility.
