The head of the UN’s food agency in Asia says record prices will not prompt a crisis as in 2008, but governments need to tackle what will be even higher costs ahead. Hiroyuki Konuma, Asia chief of the UN Food and Agricultural Organization says conditions are worrying but won’t lead to the sometimes deadly food riots seen two years ago. [Hiroyuki Konuma, UN Food and Agricultural Organization]: “The Food Price Index went up, but the general situation is much better than 2008, and the Food Price Index hike is characterized by a rise in sugar and edible oil, so not generally as serious as that time.” Wheat and corn prices have soared about 50 percent in the last year, while US soybeans have climbed over 30 percent. Governments are taking measures to tackle inflation, while in this region Australian flooding has left nations like No.2 wheat importer Indonesia searching for supply. Separately, China shelved plans to import millions of tons of expensive corn, while South Korea has cut import tariffs to offset the impact on consumers of soaring food prices. In India, vegetable prices are up over 70 percent in the last year, and the government with the highest food inflation in the region will review import and export of essential commodities.
