Hi! My husband and I have spent our last two holidays in Phuket and Koh Samui in Thailand. For our holiday in December year, we would like to visit another country but can’t decide.
We are looking for a beautiful tropical island in either Malaysia or Vietnam, with beautiful beaches that are safe for swimming.
Does anyone know what the best islands are to visit? We are looking for islands similar to Phuket and Koh Samui, ones that have touristy areas but also have unspoiled beaches.
Any advice on hotels or resorts will also be appreciated! Thanks!

It definitely has to be Malaysia. There is Perhentian island, Langkawi, Sipadan (in Sabah). All are first class islands and definitely on par with Phuket and Koh Samui if not better. But islands in Malaysia will be less happenings in the night.
For truely inspoiled beach, I recommend Sipadan island.
There are very limited islands in Vietnam, and it’s certainly not that type quality of Phuket and Koh Samui.

you can go to indonesia.
Bali has a lot of beaches, i.e kuta, sanur, nusa dua etc. java has a lot of beautiful beaches at south area also but there is a lot of big waves that might danger for the beach swimmer. pangandaran ( west java )has beautiful beach; you can see sunrise and sunset at this place, you can dive and swim also. this beach does not have big wave that might danger for the swimmer like parangtritis at yogyakarta that have very big waves
if you like diving see coral reef, you can visit banda ( south moluccas ) you need at least 2 weeks to see entire location; bunaken ( manado ); raja ampat ( west papua ) national geograpnic channel said this area has beautiful coral reef. this location is new, not even 4 years.
if you like surfing you need go to nias island ( near west sumatra ), this place is famost amongst professional sufer in the world.
The Philippines like BOHOL beaches, BORACAY island and PALAWAN beaches like EL NIDO!
