Tokyo(Japan) to England, will my friend be able to fly home with the problems caused by the volcano in Iceland?

Question by Daniel: Tokyo(Japan) to England, will my friend be able to fly home with the problems caused by the volcano in Iceland?
Hello,

I have a friend who is currently on holiday in Tokyo, Japan. He is due to fly back to England on Friday.

Will he be ok returning with the problems with the ash from the volcano in Iceland? What are the chances of him encountering problems?

Is there any alternative ways he can get back?

Is there any advice you can give if he gets stranded?

Many thanks.

Sorry matey, no-one knows. All flights from Japan to Europe are currently cancelled.

Just stay looking at the news… alternatively he could take a ship. He would be there by this time next year!

  1. It’s impossible to tell, but things might be ok by next Friday.

Why don’t you find some decent info on travelling by train, bus, coach etc across Europe for him and send him the links, just in case he ends up having to travel from somewhere unexpected? And if things stay the way they are he might end up flying over to China and trying to find his way back.

Unless the cloud comes over to Japan it won’t stop all flights, so there’s always an option, it just might be very expensive, time-consuming, and inconvenient.

It depends more on the situation at Heathrow really. If he could get as far as France he’d have few problems.

It’s very uncertain right now – things were looking more positive, then the volcano started kicking off again:

This could go on for months.

From this afternoon (Jpn time 21 Apr), the flight to London has already resumed.
