Q&A: Atheists Why do you think Santa isn’t real?

Question by Herbie: Atheists Why do you think Santa isn’t real?
Of course I’m not implying there’s a jolly old elf w/ magical reindeer living in the arctic, that’s ridiculous. I’m talking about a spirit of good will and cheer, that influences holiday merriment, and hears our gift requests.
It seems to be just as big a leap of faith to deny a Santa as it is to accept one.

Actually, santa is based on St. Nicholas–A guy who used to give gifts during his ministry.

So “Santa Claus” is actually just an exaggeration of a real person.

So technically he is real, but mythical things have been added along the years.

  2. Well, you’re assuming all atheists deny the existence of Santa Clause, which may not necessarily be true. But I personally never ever believed in Santa or any of that other crap, not even when I was little. I wish I had.

Thousands of children get raped and abused on Christmas day. So much for your idea of a spirit that spreads good will and cheer or influences merriment. If such a spirit did exist those abused children would get at least one day of peace. But they do not.

    Fail.

They can choose to celebrate it just for the purpose of having fun, which is what just what everybody does anyway.

Because he lives next door to God in Never Never Land. Good analogy by the way, Santa isn’t actually real, just a spirit of good will in ones mind, just like God. Except God is all to often a spirit of EVIL will and people suffer because of it.

Well, sure I believe in the spirit of good will and cheer. Santa Claus/Saint Nicholas/Sinterklaas/Father Christmas/Pere Noel and however many names he has is merely a personification of that spirit, much the way Gaia is a personification of nature. Besides, there is evidence that the story of Santa Claus is a human invention.
