You can come for a HOLIDAY to S Africa with lot to spend but when you want to leave they want to limit you?

Question by Mr. marsHmallow: You can come for a HOLIDAY to S Africa with lot to spend but when you want to leave they want to limit you?
I recently had to fly down to Johannesburg for a one day meeting [yes, it is absurd and spent more in the air than on the ground - it is called "work" apparently]

Now I know at least my way around, I HOPE! Been to most African countries and sort of understand the ‘way things work’ to some degree.

At Jan Smuts / Oliver Thambo / JHB International [not sure what to call it anymore] airport, on leaving, a woman standing just in front of passport stamp desk in customs, and asking ‘how much cash you have on you?!!!’

She was giving crap to some couple that seemed UK in front of me and was equally amazed.

I started to give her lot of hell in such a way that put the focus at least on me and let the others pass behind me, but, guys – this is really not the way to do things!! The SAME thing happened also at the soccer thing last year too now that I remember!

How the hell can you advertise and invite tourists to SA and then you do this? What kind of circus is this or was it just a bad day?

I do understand regulations guys, please – but we are talking clearly tourists here – it is as obvious as can be! I passed and flew back to Dubai in disbelief – just thinking of the warm hearted South African hospitality, beautiful reserves and pretty little animals being chased by lions and cheetahs – wonderful beaches – and then some bitches when you leave back from your wonderful ‘African holiday’.

This is not on man! What advice is there for the naive bunch to pass this?

  1. It just sucks big time .. once again it comes back to respect, education and proper qualifications for the job. The way i see it, even if you just sweep the floor, then you should be the best sweeper ever. They must take pride in their work, and some discipline will go a long way

As a south african i dont condone the bad vibe you got. but in our airports at customs etc you have to declare everything. cash being on thing as we want to see what we are doing on exchange. her behavior wasnt top notch as we would like it to be. you get many south africans that are…..painfully blunt (if i can put it that way). I am sorry for your experience and if you can look past it im sure you would enjoy the great stuff this country has to offer.

I know what you mean..as something like that also happened to me…first in France and then again in SA.
My family still lives out there and I go and Visit from time to time but it is now getting harder for me to be nice…my SA passport ..well what can I say…I now have a British passport and now they think they can treat you like dirt but what they do forget people talk and that is why people do not want to go back to a Country that treats you so bad.
For me the friendlist Country was Namibie..those people went out of their way to make you feel welcome even the Crew on their Airline.
But I will see if I go back next year..if the same thing happen again…you can be sure it will be my last visit to SA.
