Where in Europe would you recommend we go for December holiday?

Question by Marion L: Where in Europe would you recommend we go for December holiday?
We live in South Africa, so it needs to be affordable. Not big on shopping, would rather experience culture and see sights.

For somewhere different try Cyprus It certainly is big on both sights and culture. The Paphos are is better for a winter break. As you are avoiding the high season a few facilities like the water parks will be closed. Most Cypriots have a good knowledge of english. Car hire is very reasonable and the island is small enough that just about anywhere can be reached in 3 hours.

Being winter it will not be particularly warn and maybe a 10% chance of rain.

I am not aware of any direct flights from SA so I suspect you will need to travel via Athens.

Parts of Spain could be good. The Brits travel there in droves and over the off season you could get some decent deals there…you would be based in one place but you can travel from there.

Another place to consider is Croatia…I am thinking of places with a more warmer climate and is cheaper than other places in Europe ( considering I have heard what the ratio to rand:euro is! ( being a kiwi I can sympathise). Dubrovnik is lovely, but more expensive than the other towns ( just get accommodation out of the old town…Croaita..or at least parts of it have a B&B style accommodation…but its not called that…where you stay in peoples homes and can be reasonably cheap…but get accredited ones or you could be caught by the tourism police and fined!) Split and Zadar are also lovely. Zargreb is inland and has a completely different feel to it. There are islands you can get to along the Dalmation coast as well.
