Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, zebras, antelopes, giraffes and hippos seem to be the African animals most popular with tourists. The biggest threats come from habitat destruction, like large-scale money-making agricultural production like cattle farming and arable farming. The cattle compete with herbivores for food, and the arable farming means the food sources are also decreased, since the land is cleared to make room for the crops. As a result, many herbivores face starvation, which also affects their predators. It may also mean they have to migrate elsewhere, which increases the risk of conflict with humans, since most safaris occur in protected areas. Poaching is also a serious problem, with elephants and rhinos for the ivory trade, others for bushmeat, and the largest, most impressive specimens are prized by trophy hunters.
In addition, tourism disrupts animals’ natural behavior, i.e a cheetah constantly being photographed is unlikely to hunt successfully as the tourists advertise her presence to her prey.
