I am thinking of going traveling to Africa next year for 6 weeks – 2 months on a tour including safaris and activities. I wondered if anyone had been and could tell me how much I could expect to spend in total including flights and extras as I have nothing to base prices on. Thanks

I’d say you need to do your reseach and ask more precise questions. Cost of travel widely depends your traveling style and preferences (5-star hotels or smaller accomodations? Public transportation or tourist buses? Five star restaurants or street food?). It also depends on where in Africa you wanna travel (Africa is a continent with over 50 countries, you know? It doesn’t cost the same to go to South Africa than if you go to Mauritania or Kenya (not to say that it will be a totally different experience!)
You really need to narrow down your search, to fix an approximate budget and to figure out a basic, approximate itinerary. I use travel forums when I plan my trips. I like Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree Forum (but I’m more the backpacker style). Buy a travel guide (such as Lonely Planet), that will help you a lot!
