Hey there : )
I watched this show, and I thought it was really interesting. I watched all the episodes except for the first two, but I don’t think I really missed much.
Well, I believe they were matched up in the beginning, so they didn’t have a leader then. However, because of Pasquale’s experience as a survivalist and an adventure, he emerged as a leader. Also, he was the navigator. However, the others sometimes didn’t really agree with that. This was evident when they camped by the hippos. There was an argument about taking care of the water, and this ended up 3:1. I felt that this part of the journey helped to bring the 4 into an understanding for each other.
Anyway, Pasquale did make some mistakes. He and Kevin decided not to wait Mireya and Benedict and the donkeys in the Bahi Swamp. That was a poor decision, because it brought conflict. There really wasn’t a positive from that decision. Also, he took the crew in the wrong direction during the night, when they were walking along the river in the very early morning when it was dark out.
So, I think Pasquale was basically put in charge in the beginning. He always led the pack when they were trekking, and he made most of the critical decisions. You mentioned that they slowed down and do stupid stuff, but that’s what makes an expedition. It’s not just about getting from point A (Zanzibar) to point B (Ujiji). It’s also about the experiences, and the things they discovered. Mireya often stopped the expedition because there were animals that interested her. But that’s what her passion is, and she wanted to observe them. Even Pasquale slowed down the expedition at one point. He wanted to look at rocks which the others did not really agree upon of the decision. Mireya even said, “I like rocks, but we shouldn’t be looking at them for 8 hours.”
Sorry for running my thoughts a bit and not giving a concise answer. But this is what I thought during this show! I loved this show, and thanks for letting me share my thoughts!
