Where can South African travel to, from the UK?

Question by Party Animal: Where can South African travel to, from the UK?
I am South African, and would like to travel more, but don’t know which country I can go, without going back to South Africa to obtain a visa. If possible a country where I can work, to earn cash for further traveling plans

Best answer:

Answer by errolcollen
The world’s your oyster, buddy. I don’t think coming back here has anything to do with getting visas. You have to get a visa from the embassy of the country you want to go to, and probably every country has an embassy or representative in London. Ask them. As for jobs, always a problem. For a start, one possibility is to try to aim for some place that gets lots of English-speaking tourists (unless you can speak some foreign language), then in the tourist season you might be able to get some kind of job waitering or something like that. Don’t hurry back here.

Flights from Dubai to which nations are available for cheap? (excluding countries in Africa & Middle East)?

Question by Rishabh Singla: Flights from Dubai to which nations are available for cheap? (excluding countries in Africa & Middle East)?
I’m going to Dubai this April, and wish to fly from there to another country for a 4-day holiday. However, I don’t want to pay too much for the flight to this new country… can you please tell me names of a few countries to which flights from Dubai are not too costly (and that country should also be a good holiday destination… and Africa and Middle East cannot be included in this list)?

Thanks in advance :)

Is April a good time to visit Namibia or South Africa?

Question by Kat: Is April a good time to visit Namibia or South Africa?
My Mom and I are looking in to a safari – East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania etc) isn’t looking good due to the rain fall and general difficulty with seeing wildlife, but I was wondering about the possibility of africa.

Does anyone know what the weather and chances of being able to see wildlife are like in Nambia and/or South Africa during the first half of April?

Any help much appreciated! Thanks,

Kat

Best answer:

Answer by Tony J
The best time for a safari in Africa is in winter, for three reasons, it is not that hot and obviously more enjoyable, there is no rain so the game must go to the waterholes to drink and of course the “bush” is a lot thinner and one can see deeper into the bush and more easily spot game.

Thus, the best time is June to August but the first half of April ( Autumn )is not too bad so if you cannot delay your visit it will be OK.

Definitely worth a visit, Kruger National Park or private game park Sabi Sabi in South Africa is my recommendation…..enjoy.

Q&A: Visa answers needed – From South Africa, here on Visitors Visa, passed Army Selection, what now? In UK?

Question by per4more: Visa answers needed – From South Africa, here on Visitors Visa, passed Army Selection, what now? In UK?
My visa runs out in a few weeks, but I have recently been passed through selection, and been given an intake date which is only March next year.

I am currently on a Holiday Visa, on a South African passport.

I currently can’t work, haven’t been allowed to for the past 6 months during training for selection.

What do I do to extend my Visa, also providing the ability to work till my Army intake date.

I am in the UK and can’t get hold of anyone via phone to help me, and they only have offices in certain parts of the country, I am currently in Swindon.

Best answer:

Answer by roger e
You cannot get a work visa and you cannot extend your visitors visa so your best option is to return to South Africa and return in late February.
If you do not return to South Africa then you cannot join the Army as you will have overstayed your visa and therefore broken the UK laws and therefore ineligible to enlist

Try Krugar National Park. Google it. Its pretty f-cking awesome. They got everything from lions to tigers and cheaters. I don’t know so much about game though, as in killing sh-t. South Africa is pretty big on conservation. So I highly doubt you’d be allowed to kill our wild life. Come to think, actually, if thats really your intention, then I think you should stay the f-ck away from our Country. And go kill some of your native wild life.

Hi!

I “used” to use the larger travel websites, until I found this one:

www.JustinFunnTravel.com

They *always* have fantastic deals going everywhere you can think of!! You just enter the city you’re leaving from and where you want to go. You can also pick the hotel you want to stay at AND book a car (not to mention a gazillion other things).

The thing I “really” like about this site, is that it gives you the option to pick the seat you want to sit in on the airplane!!!

When you go to this site, be sure to sign up for the “Deals and Steals” weekly email. (this site won’t spam you either …you have to reply to a confirmation email they send before you’ll receive the newsletter). Anyway ~ it tells you the top 5 deals of the week and OMG some are amazing!!

Have fun looking at the site!
The couple who owns this site …their phone number is listed there too if you want to call them. They REALLY helped us a LOT with a trip we took a couple of months ago!
They found us a 4-day cruise for only 0.00 EACH!!!!!

Have fun on your trip!

Hugs,
LadyLynx1063

Thailand – shopping and partying!! Suggestions??

Question by Stacey: Thailand – shopping and partying!! Suggestions??
First time travellers from South Africa, Our aim is to shop and party. I was told that this would be cheap holiday, however I’m not sure how to plan it so that it will be. As we are two young girls we were told that we should book our hotels prior to leaving and that they should be at least 3 star??? So far we’ve been told to visit bangkok (4 shopping), Koh Samed, Koh Phi Phi and Koh pang yang?? However it seems quite costly to travel between these !! Please could you help me with some suggestions, reagrding where we should be visiting, great to shop and get suits tailor made that would be reasonably priced?? We will be travelling in December 2006 for 14 days?? Any help would be much appreciated – Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by Kuta
Yes, Thailand is an amazing place for vacation and definitely value for money. Do make sure your hotels are 3-star though, although this should again be extremely reasonable. Food, weather, scenery, shopping, you name it, is cheap and affordable there and I am sure it is a holiday experience you will not forget. Just be careful of the ladyboys and shemales that look like proper ladies as it is often difficult to distinguish one from a real lady.

Safaris in Tanzania, Lodge safari in Tanzania will be affected by Concession fee?

Question by George M: Safaris in Tanzania, Lodge safari in Tanzania will be affected by Concession fee?
Lodge safaris is more comfortable than camping safaris. During rain season (April and May) Lodge safari is very important. In Ngorongoro Crater is very cold from April, May and June. But with the policy changes that the Tourist will pay concession direct will make Lodge safari more expensive!!?
Safari adventure holidays can be Lodge or Camping Safari.

Best answer:

Answer by Kilimanjaro
Yeah, Concession fee is a big effect I think. The Lodges were paying concession fee to the Government. But now the Lodge have released the cost burden to Tourists.

I suggest Tourists if think lodge safari is costful, to choose Camping Safari.

I can explain meaning and types of camping safaris.
Camping safaris in Tanzania, Kenya -Africa
Camping safari is the most favourite safari and option to be close to wild animals, to hear their voices and observe their behaviour. Camping safari is preferred when a Tourist is doing photographic safaris/film and hunting safari too. Camping safaris is cheap and adventurous, even mountain climbers prefers tents, example Kilimanjaro trekking expeditions. All camping safari is professional organized to ensure comfort to tourists. Budget camping and fly camping safaris are most common types of camping safaris used in East Africa.

Budget Camping: involves traveling with all your camp equipment, your guide and possibly a cook in your vehicle with you. Our cook, tents crew and driver guide will set up a tent and prepare meals for you: if interested you can help them. These services typically use the less expensive shared or public campsites, but exclusive camps, or campsites with shower and toilet facilities outside the parks, can also be booked and used. Sleeping is in small, medium or large tents on a mattress, on a carpet laid on a ground, or mattress on a bed.

Fly Camping: Fly camping involves setting up small, temporary camps for a night under the stars, more often than not in a remote part of the bush. Fly camps are the ideal end to a day’s walking safari or game drive, with many unexpected comforts- a canvas washbasin with hot water, fresh towels, hurricane lamps and delicious food cooked on fire. At night, the sensation of sleeping in a light tent or just under a mosquito net, as the moon shines down and the noises of the African night begin, is the highlight of any safari holiday.

Camping safari in Tanzania is most comfortable yet affordable to most low budget travellers.

The other high type of camping safari offers extra comfort services which resembles Lodge safaris.

Luxury Camping: Imagine feather pillows, soft towels, gin and tonic on the rocks, 4 course gourmet meals in a candlelit dining tent as far from civilization as you can get. This is what luxury camping is all about. The tents are roomy and comfortable, with a veranda in front and directly behind the tent a bathroom with hot-water shower, wash basin and toilet. The beds have a bedside table, gas or solar lamps, chairs, and a wardrobe for your clothing. A deep freeze will supply your drinks with ice and keep specialty food items fresh. Laundry is done daily. A large staff will ensure that your meals are gourmet and all your needs in a camp are met. Luxury camps are often situated so that you can enjoy the same area for several days.

Lightweight luxury camping (extra Comfortable Camping): Like the luxury camps, tents will have metal or wood frame beds, standing headroom, a veranda and small ensuite toilets and hot showers. However, the tents will be smaller and may be the traditional A shape with central ridge pole. The camps are fully staffed and meals will be three course affairs served by waiter in a lantern lit mess tent, or on a table under the stars. Pick-up trucks, rather than Lorries often move these camps, so they don’t have luxuries such as deep freeze. There will usually be wine, beer, and soda in a camp on ice. Lightweight camps like this can be moved overnight and offer an amazing degree of comfort while maintaining the flexibility of a lighter camp.

Permanent Luxury tented camps: Most permanent tented camps are built on wooden or stone platforms with permanent mortar/brick bathroom/shower areas at the back of each tent. Tents are made from canvas and khaki or cream coloured tents are replacing the older military green. To protect the canvas, tents are placed under canopies of canvas or natural materials such as makuti (palm frond) and thatch.
Most permanent tented camps are furnished very elaborately with electricity, ceiling fans, tables, chairs, four-poster beds, large mirrors and lush carpeting. Some of the newer, more upscale camps have air-conditioning, separate lounge areas, indoor/outdoor showers/bathtubs and even private plunge pools!
Examples are: Tarangire Tree tops, Kirurumu in Lake Manyara National Park, Tamarind in Tarangire, Mbuzi Mawe and Kirawira in Western Serengeti, those are just few examples to mention.

Mobile Luxury camps: are grouped into 3 categories:
(i) Luxury Mobile camps.
(ii) Semi Luxury mobile camps
(iii) Budget Luxury mobile camps

They are essential to be mobile as most useful in tracking and viewing the Great Wildebeest migration and its Predators.

Camping safari is the cheapest yet comfortable safari accommodation. The cheapest accommodation also makes the travel cost generally down.

Also Ecotourism and Cultural experience can go with camping Safaris.

Is there any unique holidays in Tanzania, Africa?

Question by Julie36**: Is there any unique holidays in Tanzania, Africa?
any ritual or ceremonys they have annually

Best answer:

Answer by elf2002
It’s not unique to Tanzania, but the Persian New Year celebrations in Zanzibar for those who follow Zoroastrianism, called Mwaka Kogwa

‘Mwaka Kogwa’ is the traditional Shirazi, or Persian, new year celebrations that takes place in Zanzibar and although the festival has its origins in the Zoastrian religion, the Zanzibaris have certainly taken it to heart. Although the festival is celebrated around the island, the village of Makunduchi, on Unguja, is the key focus of the ritual events and each year a large crowd gathers to attend the celebration.

Together with the usual singing, dancing, feasting, and drumming that goes with all East African festivals, Mwaka Kogwa includes specific rituals destined to bring good luck in the new year. To initiate the celebration, a play fight takes and all the men of the village beat each other to vent their aggressions from the past year. Real weapons were used in the past but now banana sticks are preferred because they are less violent. As they do this, the women of the village dress up in their best clothes and proceed through the village and the fields, singing traditional songs about family, love, and joy. Then, the mganga, or traditional healer, lights a ritual hut on fire and reads which way the smoke is burning to determine the village’s prosperity in the coming year. Finally there is a large feast in which all guests are welcomed and considered a sign of happiness and prosperity.

Traditional Swahili food is accompanied by taraab music, and on the beaches the drums and dancing continue long into the night.

Mwaka Kogwa takes place every year around the 23rd or 24th of July, but if you’re planning to time your visit to attend the celebrations, check with your travel agent to verify the date and for further details.

Zanzibar Cultural Festival

Held throughout the Zanzibar Archipelago, the annual Zanzibar Cultural Festival showcases the diverse traditions and celebrations of the region. Performers come from many countries around Africa, but Swahili culture is mostly represented. Zanzibari taraab music and traditional dances are performed by a rich ensemble of cultural troupes from Tanzania and abroad. Arts and crafts that celebrate local culture are exhibited and enjoyed.

Around the archipelago, locals celebrate the cultural festival with workshops, cultural events and performances held in shifting locales. Street carnivals in Stone Town, small fairs, and canoe races also take place. On the northern island of Pemba, the festival marks the annual bull fight, a remnant of Portuguese presence on the islands, where trained bulls prance after unarmed men in a humorous and festive version of the Iberian spectacle.

The Zanzibar Cultural Festival occurs each year in July, directly after the international Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) Festival of the Dhow Countries. For more details please visit www.ziff.or.tz or contact the organisers at ziff@ziff.or.tz

Zanzibar International Film Festival of the Dhow Countries

Each year ZIFF organises and runs the Festival of the Dhow Countries, which draws participants and visitors to Zanzibar from around the world.

The Festival of the Dhow Countries celebrates and promotes the unique culture that grew as a result of Indian Ocean trade and the wooden sailing dhow. All nations in the shadow of the diaspora are included in the celebration, from Africa to the Indian Ocean. Contemporary artists, musicians, cultural troupes, photographers, and film makers from the dhow countries are showcased and their work promoted, discusses, awarded, and explored.

The highlight of the festival is the Zanzibar International Film Festival itself, a film competition that draws prestigious entries from the dhow countries of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The competition is judged by a panel of international figures and attracts more than one hundred entries in its separate categories. Film screenings take place around Stone Town, in various historical landmarks. Music, drama, and dancing performances also take place around the island and attract a large audience. During the festival, workshops, seminars, conferences, and a variety of cultural and arts-related programs are open to the public, with specific forums to attract and creatively empower women and children.

The Festival of the Dhow Countries is Tanzania’s major annual cultural event and one of only eight major festivals in sub-Saharan Africa. It occurs every year in the first two weeks of July.

I’m going on holiday to South Africa at the end of the month, spending a week in Johannesburg and a week in Cape Town. We are going to the mycokefest in both Joburg and Cape Town out there. Our transfers from airport to hotel are not included so we will need taxis, and taxis to and from the festival.

So my question is, how much is advisable to take and in what form – ie cash, travellers cheque.

South Africa is modern, even though there is 3rd. world as well. You would be okay with Visa, Travelex, the checks. Stay in the torist areas if you are on holidays. If your touring the poorer areas I suggest you be careful and link up with other people. “Locals”

There are beautiful hotels, and food. You will love.

Don’t miss hikeing Table Mountain. !!!

Good luck

Escourted tours to South Africa…?

Question by intonothing_x: Escourted tours to South Africa…?
I’m 19, and interested in visiting South Africa, you know, the typical tourist stuff like the Garden Route for example. I don’t know anyone who would want to go, and I gather traveling alone there for anyone isn’t the best idea in the world – is this the case? Would I be safer traveling with an organised, escourted tour, how would this work? In the past I’ve only ever booked my own holidays like flight and accomadation separately and gone myself.

Thanks for any advice.

It is true that it is not safe to travel alone in South Africa. The Garden Route is beautiful. I wonder though about a coach tour, I feel the people on it would be older. So try to get a tour for the younger age group. I know there is a backpacker bus that runs from Cape Town. Try Baz bus on the Internet, for more details. Remember do not wear expensive jewelry or watches, nor show off expensive cameras and cell phones. If you can fit in the Kruger Park do so. South Africa is a beautiful country, but still has a high crime rate. Be advised by the locals where to go and not to go. Enjoy your trip.

Well, for starters the Genocide going on over in Darfur, Sudan could be keeping a lot of out of Africa, lol. Also I hear a lot about women getting groped or stared at disgustingly from the natives. An advantage could be that you get to see women raped first hand or decapitations if you’re lucky….
